Tax return donations to help farmers, hungry families

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The state of Kentucky is asking residents to donate a portion of their tax returns to help feed the hungry.

Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles asked taxpayers to check a box on their income tax return that routes a small portion of their return to the Farms to Food Banks Trust Fund.

The program gives grants to nonprofits to purchase surplus produce from farmers and distribute them to the poor. Quarles described the program as a win-win: the hungry are fed and farmers are paid for food that would otherwise go to waste.

Quarles noted that a quarter of Kentucky children lack consistent access to food.

Last year, the program distributed 2.6 million pounds of fruits and vegetables to struggling families from 300 Kentucky farmers.
