Sturgis Elementary School Students visits Earle C Clements to pass on Knowledge of the 7 Habits.
January 31st, 2017
On January 25, 2017, Earle C. Clements, in conjunction with Sturgis Elementary School (Union County Public Schools), held a leadership training involving students from both educational institutions.
Sturgis Elementary School (SES) is attempting to establish ‘Lighthouse’ status through the Leader In Me, Stephen R. Covey process. Their efforts have proven to have a positive impact on their school and student culture. The ‘Lighthouse’ status program is designed to help schools create a positive learning environment using content from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Additionally, the program encourages students to use skills such as public speaking, goal setting, teamwork and critical thinking.
SES and Earle C. Clements met to collaborate and create a partnership for sharing their leadership ideas. The SES students shared how the 7 Habits have become a key component to their school. They took time to teach several student leaders about the 7 habits and offered suggestions for how to implement them at the center.
The SES students taught Earle C. Clements students about the following 7 Habits:
Habit 1 – Be Proactive. The concept of being proactive is to take initiative and do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
Habit 2 – Begin with the End in Mind. Habit two is planning ahead and setting goals for yourself.
Habit 3 – Put First Things First. This concept means being structured and disciplined. Spend time doing things that are of most importance.
Habit 4 – Think Win-Win. Have the mindset that everyone can win. One person doesn’t have to lose in order for another person to win.
Habit 5 – Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood. Listen to the opinions of others before offering input. It is important to listen to the ideas and thoughts of others.
Habit 6 – Synergize. This concept encourages others to work together to accomplish tasks more quickly and more efficiently.
Habit 7 – Sharpen the Saw. Spend time doing things you enjoy to ensure a healthy mind and body.
The Earle C. Clements students enjoyed spending time with the SES students. The idea behind the meeting today was to further enhance the relationship with the Union County Public School system and to teach our students they can be leaders using the 7 habits of leadership.
Next, they will take Earle C. Clements students to SES to tour the school to see how the students use the habits in their everyday learning environment.
They were pleased with last weeks training and look forward to embracing the 7 habits of leadership at Earle C. Clements Job Corps Academy
