Retired sergeant dies from injuries in West Virginia crash

ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) A retired Boyd County Sheriff’s sergeant has died from injuries sustained in a crash in Huntington, West Virginia in June.

Multiple news outlets report that the sheriff’s department says Phillip Slone of Ashland, Kentucky, died Sunday.

Slone was driving his pickup truck June 29 when he was struck by another truck driven by 43-year-old Robert Jason Means.

Slone was hospitalized in critical condition, and Means was charged with DUI causing serious bodily injury.

A criminal complaint shows Means’ blood-alcohol content was .104 and authorities say there were several full and empty beer cans around Means’ truck.

Cabell County Prosecutor Corky Hammers told WSAZ-TV (http://bit.ly/2gfBZ7L ) that the charge against Means will be upgraded to DUI causing death.

Slone had retired from the department six months before the crash.
