Authorities have released the identity of the juvenile hit and killed while riding his bicycle in Morganfield last night.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Corey King identified the victim as 17 year Damon Collins of Morganfield.

Around 8:30 Wednesday night, Kentucky State Police responded to the scene of the wreck on KY 2091 where they say an investigation determined 22 year old Steven Wayne Freeman Jr, of Morganfield, was driving a passenger car and struck the teen while he was riding a bicycle on Highway 2091 in the Whispering Meadows area. The 17 year old was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Freeman was arrested and lodged in the Union County Detention Center charged with murder, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs (aggravated) and operating on a suspended operator’s license.

KSP was assisted at the scene by the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union County EMS, Life Flight, Morganfield Rescue and Whispering Meadows Fire Department.

State Police are continuing to investigate the fatality.

Due to the tragic loss, Union County Public Schools’ Assistant Superintendent Steve Carter tells WMSK News safety is always a primary concern in the school district. He says the loss of the 12th grade student has raised many emotions, concerns and questions, especially for the students.

He says the weeks and days ahead will be difficult for everyone.

The staff here at WMSK would like to extend our condolences to the family of the juvenile and our prayers to both families during this tragic and difficult time.
