Morganfield man arraigned in armed bank robbery

A Morganfield man charged in connection to an armed robbery at a local bank made his first court appearance on Thursday.

Court documents indicate 28 year old Antonio Smith appeared in Union County District Court and entered a not guilty plea during his arraignment.

After a week-long investigation, Smith was arrested on December 31st after a search warrant was served at Northside Apartments by the Morganfield and Sturgis Police Departments, Kentucky State Police, a Henderson Sheriff K-9 Unit and the Union County Sheriff’s Office. While at the apartment, police reportedly recovered the gun and several items of clothing worn during the robbery.

Smith is accused of walking into Fifth Third Bank in downtown Morganfield around Noon on December 23rd, wearing a mask and armed with a handgun. He then demanded money from the teller, according to Morganfield Police Sergeant Geoffrey Deibler, and fled from the bank…a story you heard first reported by WMSK News just minutes after the armed robbery occurred. Sgt. Deibler reported Smith got away with $10,000, but dropped about 2-thousand dollars on his way out of the bank.

Smith remains lodged in the Union County Detention Center on charges of first degree robbery and first degree wanton endangerment.

He is scheduled to be back in district court for a preliminary hearing next week.
