MFD: Occupant and 9 Animals Rescued, 2 Cats Perished in Morganfield House Fire

Local firefighters and emergency personnel responded to a house fire this morning in Morganfield where the occupant and 9 animals were rescued, but two cats reportedly died in the blaze.

Morganfield Fire Department Chief Ricky Millikan tells WMSK News that firefighters from MFD, Whispering Meadows Fire Department, the Union County Fire Department, along with the Morganfield Police Department and Union County EMS, were dispatched around 11:25 a.m. Sunday to 237 East McElroy Street for a reported structure fire with victims possibly inside.

He says Morganfield Police Detective Chad Vos was first on scene and removed the occupant from the house. Firefighters reportedly made a quick attack on a fully involved kitchen fire and were able to contain the fire to the room of origin.

According to Chief Millikan, the occupant stated there were several animals in the house.  While MFD firefighters attacked the fire, Union County firefighters rescued 3 dogs and 6 cats. However, he reports two cats perished in the fire and were removed from the home.

Chief Millikan says Union County Dog Warden Ritchie Jones assisted at the scene by taking possession of the rescued animals, and Union County EMS treated the occupant for smoke inhalation but she refused transport to the hospital.

Chief Millikan says it was determined that the fire started on the stove in the kitchen and quickly spread throughout the kitchen.

Firefighters were on scene for approximately one (1) hour.
