Mary Carolyn Girten

Mary Carolyn Girten, 77 of Uniontown passed away on January 16, 2019 at Morganfield Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Uniontown, KY, July 23, 1941 to Richard & Maude Buckman.

She married the love of her life, James B. Girten on April 30, 1960 and celebrated 52 years of marriage. She was a life-long member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Uniontown. She worked as bookkeeper for French& Lyon Equipment Co. for years before owning and operating Uniontown/Morganfield Home Center, Hometown Inn, and Hometown Liquors. She was a very successful business woman thriving and exceling in predominately-male building material supply industry.

She was heavily involved, working tirelessly in her community and church while serving as church picnic chairwoman, first woman president of Morganfield Lion’s Club, and Altar Society member. She will be remembered as a caring, selfless, fun-loving and devoted wife, mother, and friend. She was a doting grandmother ”MeMaw” to her 5 grandsons lavishing them with love, attention, and guidance.

Along with all her church and community involvement she enjoyed traveling with her husband Jimmy, gardening, her time at their river camp, painting, and spending time with her family. She made a lasting impact on everyone she ever met.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents Richard and Maude Buckman; husband James B. Girten; son James B. Jr.; daughter Brenda Catherine; sister Ann Marie; and brother Bucky.

Surviving Mary Carolyn are her children James “Tony” & wife Jennifer Girten of Morganfield; daughter Michelle Baird & husband John of Uniontown; sisters Rosie Floyd & husband Hamel of Uniontown; Sylvia Franklin of Uniontown, Brenda Alvey of Morganfield; Brother David Buckman of Louisville.

Grandsons Kevin Baird & wife Kristen, Chase Girten & wife Emily, Robbie Baird & wife Sammie, Travis Girten & wife Rebecca, and Camden Girten; 4 great grandsons and 1 great granddaughter.

Funeral service for Carolyn will be 12 Pm Friday 1/18/2019 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Uniontown with Fr. Randy Howard officiating. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Uniontown.

Visitation will be 3-8 PM Thursday and 9 AM until service time Friday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield. Prayers will be at 7:30 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Anthony’s Hospice or St. Agnes Building Fund.
