Louisville officer helps deliver baby while on patrol

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A police officer helped deliver a baby while on patrol in Louisville.

Local news organizations report that officer Elisha Thompson was driving around Monday afternoon when she saw a woman in a car flashing her high beams and honking her horn. The driver was signaling that her friend in the passenger seat was going into labor.

Thompson then pulled over, opened the car door and helped the woman.

Thompson says she put some gloves on and cradled the baby’s head as it came out. Within minutes, the baby girl was born.

Emergency crews eventually arrived and escorted the mother and child to a hospital.

Twenty-nine-year-old Thompson says she had never witnessed childbirth until Monday. The Louisville Metro Police Department congratulated Thompson on her actions.
