Lord of the Fork Race Set For Oct. 24 on Russell Fork

ELKHORN CITY, Ky. – The Lord of the Fork whitewater race – which attracts paddlers from around the world — will be Oct. 24 on the Russell Fork River.

This competition features Class 5 rapids that require experienced paddlers to maneuver through whitewater. The Russell Fork runs through a gorge strewn with boulders and offers paddlers plenty of challenges.

The Lord of the Fork event is part of the Kentucky Outdoor Adventure Games being held during October. The Russell Fork runs through Breaks Interstate Park, which is in Kentucky and Virginia, and into Elkhorn City.

The event is a timed down-river race with competitors, most of them in kayaks, breaking at 1-minute intervals. It attracts many of the best whitewater paddlers in the world. Previous winners have hailed from across the United States, England, France, and New Zealand.

“The Russell Fork has drawn an international whitewater crowd for nearly 30 years. We’re proud to be part of Kentucky’s Outdoor Adventure Games in 2015,” said Steven Ruth, the adventure tourism liaison for Elkhorn City.
