Motorists reminded to buckle up, enforcement heightened through Memorial Day
HENDERSON, Ky. (May 20, 2017)–Beginning Monday, May 22, 2017 through Sunday, June 04, 2017, Kentucky State Police will be participating in the “Click It or Ticket” national seatbelt enforcement campaign. This federal highway safety initiative focuses on seatbelt and child restraint enforcement as well as driver education.
“Memorial Day traditionally marks the beginning of the summer driving season”, says Trooper Corey King, spokesperson for the KSP Henderson Post. “Our agency expects a significant increase in travel on the state’s roadways which unfortunately increases the probability of collisions”. “As a trooper and a parent – I can assure you there is nothing more difficult than going to the door of an unexpecting parent and telling them their son or daughter has been killed in a crash” says King.
In Kentucky, during the 2016 Memorial Day holiday period, there were 1,355 crashes resulting in 394 injuries and nine deaths.
The campaign’s duration will be highlighted by troopers aggressively targeting those who choose not to wear seatbelts or use child safety restraints.
Throughout the Post 16 district, troopers will conduct saturation patrols in high-traffic areas and high-crash locations in which intensified speed and impaired driving enforcement will take place.
KSP will be partnering with local law enforcement agencies to conduct traffic safety checkpoints in the Post 16 district. KSP utilizes traffic safety checkpoints to promote safety for motorists and to provide a deterrent for those who violate laws contained in the Kentucky Revised Statutes.
