Kentucky Office of Homeland Security accepting grant applications
January 12th, 2017
FRANKFORT, Ky. (January 12, 2017) – The Kentucky Office of Homeland Security (KOHS) announced today they will accept applications for the federally-funded 2017 Homeland Security Grant Program January 13, 2017 through February 17, 2017.
The grants, funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), can be used by city and county governments, merged units of government, area development districts, and fire protection districts for first-responder equipment, communications, cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection.
“The Homeland Security Grant Program is highly competitive, with grant requests far exceeding available funding,” said KOHS Executive Director John Holiday. “This represents a tremendous responsibility for our office, one we take with the utmost respect and humility.”
The U.S. DHS is expected to announce the amount of available grant dollars in February. Federal government grant submission guidelines require all grant requests to be completed by February 17, and funds are released to states in late August. Therefore, KOHS will announce grant recipients in September.
For the 2016 federal fiscal year, KOHS received 262 applications representing more than $15 million in grant requests and allocated $2.7 million through 112 grants across 74 Kentucky counties.
Holiday directed that grant approvals will be prioritized and approved based on critical need and/or the widest multi-jurisdictional reach possible in order to best equip the Commonwealth’s first responders.
To ensure grant decisions are made in the fairest and most effective manner, the KOHS enlists a team of highly disciplined, multi-disciplinary experts, each representing a wealth of experience, to prioritize grant requests.
KOHS will post a PowerPoint at www.homelandsecurity.ky.gov from January 13th through February 17th to assist agencies in preparing applications for grants. The PowerPoint, “FY 2017 Homeland Security Grant Application Guidance and Instructions,” provides guidance and step-by-step information on how to complete an application online
