Kentucky man sentenced in 1998 slaying of estranged wife

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — A southern Kentucky man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in the 1998 slaying of his estranged wife.

The Daily News (http://bit.ly/2bBZRN0) reports a judge handed down the sentence on Tuesday for Leland Neal Jr. in the death of Carol Neal, a Bowling Green social worker who was reported missing in 1998. Although her body was never found, hikers found part of her skull in 2003 in a densely wooded area of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Although Leland Neal was originally indicted in 2014 on charges including murder, he pleaded guilty last month to lesser counts that included manslaughter.

The couple was in the midst of divorcing when Carol Neal disappeared.
