Kentucky House Speaker sues Republican governor over emails

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The Democratic speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives has sued the state’s Republican governor for refusing to release 13 pages of emails relating to a road project in Jessamine County.

House Speaker Greg Stumbo filed the lawsuit Friday morning in Franklin Circuit Court. Stumbo asked for the emails as part of his investigation about whether Bevin delayed the road project to punish a Democratic state lawmaker for refusing to switch parties. Bevin has denied any wrongdoing and said the project was poorly vetted and rushed by the prior administration.

Last week, Bevin released some emails, but said 13 pages of records were “exempt from disclosure.” Stumbo said all of the emails should be public.

The lawsuit and the investigation come as Republicans and Democrats battle for control of the state legislature.
