Henderson Man Charged in Central Park Vandalism Case

A 27 year old Henderson man is behind bars facing charges in connection to the vandalism of Memorial crosses at Central Park.

According to Henderson Police, Anthony Burrus has been arrested for first degree criminal mischief and leaving the scene of an accident.

Authorities say the car Burris was driving, a 1979 Ford Thunderbird, was found abandoned at McDonald’s on South Green Street. The vehicle reportedly had pieces of a cross and stake to hold the cross embedded in the tires.

Burris is accused of driving a vehicle through the Memorial Day cross display at Central Park around 5:55 a.m. Saturday and damaging at least 160 crosses, which cost $90 each.

Volunteers, the Henderson Fire Department, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, and Henderson Police Dept. Pulled together to repair and place the crosses back in the ground.

Police indicate the crosses are cared for by the Henderson War Memorial Foundation in conjunction with the America Legion Worsham Post No. 40.
