Georgia Davis Powers to lie in state in Kentucky Capitol

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The tributes are continuing for Georgia Davis Powers, a civil-rights icon and the first African-American woman elected to the Kentucky Senate. Powers will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda on Thursday afternoon.

Powers died last Saturday at the age of 92.

Powers will lie in state at the Capitol from 1:30 to 4 p.m. EST. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m.

Powers was elected to the state Senate in 1967. She took office in 1968 and served for 21 years.

Gov. Matt Bevin has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise Thursday through sundown in honor of Powers.

Bevin says Powers will be remembered for breaking down barriers to advance the cause of civil rights.
