Friday After 5 returns to Owensboro

NEWS RELEASE

OWENSBORO, Ky. (April 19, 2016) — Owensboro’s popular Friday After 5 concert series soon returns to the downtown riverfront for 16 consecutive weeks of free family entertainment.

Friday After 5, celebrating its 20th season, is May 20 through Sept. 2, at Smothers Park on the Ohio River. The music and entertainment begins at 5 p.m.

“Fun, free, friends and family are words to describe Friday After 5,” said Kirk Kirkpatrick, executive director. “Friday After 5 is really more than a concert series. It’s a complete entertainment experience for all ages.”

This year 68 bands are booked for the full schedule. All genres of music are performed on six stages across the five blocks of Smothers Park, an Owensboro downtown district with entertainment, dining, shopping and hotels. The park features a cascading waterfall, three signature fountains, a spray park and Lazy Dayz, one of the nation’s largest handicap accessible playgrounds.

Friday After 5 music venues span each end of Smothers Park, from the Owensboro Convention Center to RiverPark Center. The popular Glenn Family Services Gospel on the River series returns to the performing arts center’s Cannon Hall. Six performances by gospel acts are scheduled and the 1,500-seat hall fills with church groups and fans.

At Smothers Park, the Kroger Street Fair offers a variety of entertaining activities for all ages and especially children. The Don Moore Automotive Party Pier platform on the river provides late night entertainment until 11 p.m. More music is played at the BB&T Plaza Patio, the Atoms Energy Courtyard and on the centerpiece Overlook Stage.

Friday After 5 attracts thousands of people from the surrounding area, including high school class reunions finding good reason to celebrate in Owensboro.

Friday After 5 offers Class Preunions as a unique twist to kicking off the weekend celebrations. Reunions can choose from a gathering space at the RiverPark Center lobby, or reserved seating at the Convention Center’s Party Pier. There is no charge for the services. Last year, 30 class reunions booked preunion parties at Friday After 5.
