Fire Prevention Week

NEWS RELEASE

FRANKFORT, Ky – Kentucky State Fire Marshal Mike Haney joins the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in educating Kentuckians during Fire Prevention Week, which runs through Oct. 15.

“The best way to practice fire safety is to make sure a fire doesn’t break out in the first place,” said Haney. “Look around for potential problems, like overloaded electrical outlets and the use of too many extension cords. These are all easy fixes,” he added.

Haney also advises to test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries once a year or when they chirp, which indicates that they’re running low. He also advises to replace smoke detectors every 10 years. “To find out the age of your smoke alarm and its expiration date, look on the back of the alarm where the date of manufacture is marked. The smoke alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date.”

The Division of Fire Prevention also advises families to map out an escape plan, making sure that there are at least two ways out of each room.

1. Draw a map of your home. Show all doors and windows.
2. Visit each room. Find two ways out.
3. All windows and doors should open easily. You should be able to use them to get outside.
4. Pick a meeting place outside. It should be in front of your home. Everyone will meet at the meeting place.
5. Make sure your house or building number can be seen from the street.
6. Talk about your plan with everyone in your home.
7. Learn the emergency phone number for your fire department.
8. Practice, practice and practice your home escape plan.
