Evansville police say man fatally shot after squad car theft

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Police say Evansville officers fatally shot a man after a chase that started when he charged at another officer with a knife and stole her squad car.

Evansville police spokesman Sgt. Jason Cullum says officers were called Tuesday night to a restaurant in Eastland Mall about a man making death threats.

Cullum says the man charged at the first officer to arrive as she got out of her car. Cullum says the man led other officers on a brief chase before losing control of the vehicle on a street on the city’s east side.

Officers say they had a brief confrontation with the man as he left the police car before they fired shots. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. His identity wasn’t immediately released.
