EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — An Evansville riverboat casino has broken ground on its $50 million land-based operation.

Tropicana Evansville not only held a ceremonial groundbreaking with dignitaries Tuesday but also began demolition of a former office building that’s in the footprint of the new casino due to be completed by late next year. It will replace a riverboat in operation since 1995.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports (http://bit.ly/2a6urk3 ) Tropicana Evansville General Manager John Chaszar said the new building will have high ceilings, more space and quality dining options that will more closely resemble a Las Vegas casino than the current operation.

Legislation enabling riverboat casinos to move inland passed the General Assembly earlier this year and took effect without Gov. Mike Pence’s signature.
