Bridge Inspection Scheduled for Shawneetown Bridge on Tuesday, April 20th

Inspection scheduled for completion on Sunday, April 25th

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (April 15, 2021) – The Kentuckty Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 2 Office advises motorists of an inspection on the Shawneetown Bridge over the Ohio River.

A contractor will begin the inspection process on Tuesday, April, 20th with completion scheduled for Sunday, April 25. Crews will be utilizing an under bridge inspection truck for the deck truss spans.

A bucket truck will be used to inspect lower truss locations above the deck and increase the efficiency of the rope access work. An unmanned aerial system (UAS) will be used to capture the necessary overall inspection photos and to check the piers.

Maintenance of traffic will be addressed daily with single lane closures and flagging operations. Bridge crews will be on site between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Motorists should allow themselves additional time during their commute to arrive at their destination in a timely fashion.

The Shawneetown Bridge connects KY 56 (Morganfield-Shawneetown Road) at the 0 mile marker with Illinois Route 13 across the Ohio River between Morganfield, Kentucky, and Shawneetown, Illinois.  About 3,800 vehicles cross the bridge in an average day.

The 3,200-foot structure opened to traffic in 1956, maintaining a historic transportation link that started with ferry service at the site as early as 1802.

The Shawneetown Bridge is at Ohio River navigation mile point 858.1
