78 year old Todd County man killed in 2-vehicle wreck

Allegre, KY (Todd County) – The Kentucky State Police is investigating a two-vehicle, fatality-collision that occurred at the intersection of KY 171 and KY 507, in Allegre, on Wednesday, April 20, at 2:01 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Johnny Powell, 53, Elkton, was operating a 1998 Nissan pickup truck southbound on KY 171. A 17-year-old was operating a 2011 Mazda passenger car northbound on KY 507. As the 17-year-old was approaching the intersection, it appears that they failed to stop at the stop sign and proceeded through the intersection. The two vehicles collided at the intersection.

The 17-year-old and the passenger, Erica Burden, 18, Drakesboro, were transported via ambulance to Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital for treatment. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Johnny Powell was transported via ambulance to the Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville for treatment. His passenger, Robert Powell, 78, Elkton, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Todd County Coroner’s Office. Neither of the occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Trooper First Class Craig Engler is investigating the collision. KSP Post 2 units, the Todd County Sheriff’s Department, the Allegre Volunteer Fire Department, Todd County EMS, and the Todd County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene.

The collision remains under investigation by the KSP.
